Facts and Tips on Preventing Mold Growth

Mold growth occurs when mold spores land on a wet surface and have access to water, food, and the right temperature. Mold can grow on wet clothes, in a damp basement, and condensation on cool surface. Mold growth can appear on wet paper products, cardboard, ceiling tiles, wood, insulation, and upholstry. Mold can also grow on wallpaper glue, some paints, and grease. Poor ventilation of heating and cooking appliances can contribute to mold growth.
Here are some tips to help prevent mold growth in your home.
1. Keep indoor humidity below 60% relative humidity, ideally between 30% and 50%.
2. Repair leaky pipes and faucets.
3. Turn on exhaust fans while cookin or bathing.
4. Clean gutters.
5. Make sure water drains away from your home.
Here are some ways to clean mold
1. Use undistilled white vinegar on hard surfaces in kitchens and bathrooms. Apply it driectly to the mold.
2. Make a bleach solution. Mix 1 cup of bleach to 1 gallon of water.
3. Mix 50/50 solution of ammonia and water apply to the surface.
